Rocco Sugameli, Principal

August, 2002

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2002/2003 school year. I am very excited about this new school year and I hope that you and your children are looking forward to this year as well. In many respects this will be a year of change.  The most significant change that you will notice is the change in the new district elementary grading system  As I informed you at the end of last school year, we will be moving away from a regular report card and implementing a system based on updating you on your child's progress toward meeting state standards.  Part of this change will be the switch to trimester (3) reporting periods during the year as opposed to the traditional four quarters.  All schools in the state are required to teach the Arizona State Standards and report progress to parents.  In addition, all students will be required to pass the high school AIMS test as part of their graduation requirement for high school starting in the year 2006.  This will obviously affect your children.  We have focused on standards for many years and our curriculum is aligned to the standards.  We are now prepared to better report their progress on the standards to you.  We are confident that our children will continue to do very well academically.  I urge you to read the Parent Guide to Curriculum and Assessment that is included in the handbook which goes into further detail.  I will also be giving a formal presentation on curriculum and assessment during our parent information nights.

We also welcome some new faces to our Butterfield family this year.  I hope that you join me in welcoming the Butterfield staff members and families new to our school.  We know that each and every new staff member, child, or family member will bring many positive and valuable contributions to our community.  While I believe that we have an excellent school, I also recognize that it is always healthy for an organization to grow and look for new and different ways of doing things.  Butterfield certainly is no exception.  While we enjoy great parental and community support, I want you as parents to be even more involved in your child's education.  I want to know how you think we are doing.  Most of all, I want you to actively participate in our school and be part of our school improvement efforts.  I will do whatever I can this year to foster and facilitate your participation.  Please be involved, please attend our parent group (BCAC) meetings, please volunteer any way that you can.  Your children will benefit greatly from your involvement.

In closing, I would like to share a poem that I have shared before but continues to be what is in my heart when it comes to schools and leadership.

May I become at all times, both now and forever,
A protector for those without protection,
A guide for those who have lost their way,
A ship for those with oceans to cross,
A bridge for those with rivers to cross,
A sanctuary for those in danger,
A lamp for those without light,
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter,
And a servant for all in need.

Have a great year!
Rocky Sugameli
